Homeschoolers: Henty Books Are Free (for Now)

I don’t know how long this sale will last. If your children enjoy historical fiction, now is a great time to stock up:

You don’t have to have a Kindle to read these:

I’m reading them on my computer with the free Kindle for PC program.

Warning

While many people love the Henty historical adventure stories, they are violent (most of them are war stories) and are not politically correct. Henty wrote in the mid- to late-1800′s, and he was a man of his times.

Here is a list of (some) Henty books in chronological order, and a pro-Henty review, and an anti-Henty review.

For Balance

There are plenty of Jane Austen books free, too!

Wow…that’s a LONG list of works. Can you narrow this down a bit? Have you read them all?

No, I’ve heard about the Henty books for years, but haven’t been able to afford them. I downloaded about 70 of them yesterday and checked the formatting on a few (since some free Kindle books are worth what you pay for them!), and they looked fine.

Ancient Egypt is a favorite at our house, so I’m starting with The Cat of Bubastes.

Further information: Here is a list of some of the Henty books in chronological order, and a pro-Henty review, and an anti-Henty review. (I think I’ll add those to the main post.)

Awesome! I just found three of the books that will eventually come up in the history program I am using with my girls – it’ll be several years before they get to the books, but that’s a good $30 I won’t have to spend down the line!

    Thanks for the tip!

Another great free resource for Henty books and much more is: http://www.online-literature.com/ga-henty/

Now, you do read them online as well, right off the website, so it’s not as nice as having them on your kindle, but it is a nice option once the other offer expires (if it does… hopefully not!)

I only downloaded the Kindle app on my computer, but I will be sure to grab those Henty books and slap them on there. What a nice addition to my library. Thanks so much for this info!

My oldest son liked Henty books, the next son can’t stand them. My third boy loved them as long as he has a break from reading them.

He read 4 or 5 in a row and noticed the format of all the stories is the same. Boy is courageous, grows up, saves the day. Oh and he commented that the main character always has a faithful side kick too.

I read one as a read aloud to the boys and enjoyed it. I’d recommend Beric the Briton.

Thanks for the recommendation, Sharon! I’ll move that one onto my Kindle to read after I finish Pride & Prejudice.
